H8ers! <3ers! Isn’t social media just full of people who have radical opinions? It’s been a while since we first shared information about the distribution of opinions/sentiment in social media so we thought it was about time we conducted our little experiment again.

For six different sets of data, we gathered hundreds of thousands of sentiment scores and prepared frequency distributions of the results. As you can see below, some brands have more positive (A, B) sentiment while others have more negative (C, E, F) sentiment. You can also see that some brands have more flat (E) or peeked (C) distributions, or longer tails (A, B). No matter which particular feature of a brand’s chart interests you, it is clear that all of the distributions are reasonably normal, they are generally bell shaped.

So is social media full of haters and lovers? Most definitely not. Most social media data consists of lots of moderate like and dislike, plus a healthy representation of haters and lovers. Now the only puzzle is determining which of these charts reflects the sentiment of 1) autism, 2) Lady Gaga, 3) Obama, 4) Steve Jobs, 5) Toyota, and 6) Walmart.

Both Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga have had amazing careers in their few short years in the industry. Among others, Taylor has enjoyed AMAs, CMAs, CMTs, Grammys, MTV VMs, and Teen Choice awards. Lady Gaga has also had an award filled career with Billboard, MTV, People’s Choice, Teen Choice awards and many other credits to her name.

With the Grammy’s upon us again, let’s look at sentiment towards each singer over just the past couple of months. We scored more than 20 000 opinions from thousands of different websites for each of the ladies to figure out exactly how people feel towards them.

Compared to 28% of opinions that expressed “Love” for Taylor, only 21% expressed “Love” for Lady Gaga. Similarly, another 24% expressed “Like” for Taylor compared to just 13% for Lady Gaga. The remaining opinions fell into the neutral and negative categories, with Lady Gaga clearly generating more of the negative opinions. It’s plain to see that popular sentiment puts Taylor ahead of Lady Gaga.

But why you ask? Which particular perceptions do fans have that put Taylor ahead of Lady Gaga?

Taylor Swift fans recognize not just her personal characteristics, but also her commitment to others. Fans think that Taylor Swift:

Shows more courage

Is associated with charities

Is more environmentally friendly and

Has nicer makeup and clothing

.

Not to be left completely behind though, fans of Lady Gaga notice her personal characteristics and feel that she is:

more creative

more determined

more exciting and

more intelligent

.

And that is the Taylor Swift/Lady Gaga dichotomy.

Yesterday, we had a look at some of the lows of 2009. Let’s cheer things up a bit by looking at a few of the highs. For your viewing pleasures, we have charted a number of celebrities who have received lots of praise in the social media space over the last year. Lady Gaga’s unique personality and fashion choices have proved to work for her as evidenced by her ongoing improvement in sentiment. CD sales will be sure to follow. Manny Pacquiao, or PacMan as he is fondly called, also had a great year from the consumer point of view, having won a bazillion boxing matches and potentially being the best boxer in the world. Robert Pattinson, associated with the New Moon movie, obviously had a great year and benefited from the success of the movie.

But here’s the most interesting part. Captain Sully, the nation’s hero who saved more than one hundred and fifty lives by landing his airplane on the Hudson river, didn’t lead the pack. He may not be, and may not even want to be a huge celebrity, but he made the chart with his bravery and broke into the celebrity world. How nice to have a positive role model in 2009!
