Survey Says Belieb in #NeverSayNever #MRX

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

You can’t help but be a belieber when you witness the stunning rise to fame of Justin Bieber, small town kid turned worldwide pop sensation. His meteoric rise to fame has led many to become skeptics of his talent, perhaps leading to the film “Never Say Never” appearing in theaters this week.

With the massive volumes of online conversations about the movie, we can look at people’s perceptions towards the upcoming movie on a day by day basis. In this chart, the dark green line shows the percentage of conversations that were positive. From early January right until the end of January, more than 60% of conversations about the movie were positive, including between 25% and 45% which were very positive.

But what happened in February? With the movie release just days away, why did the percentage of negative conversations suddenly increase while the percentage of positive conversations decreased?

First, people got really, really, really, really tired of hearing about the movie and they dreaded the fact that it was about to become a gigantic topic of conversation.

  • “Who cares about a stupid kid with no talent”
  • “Oh no, the world is going to go effing crazy in 5 days when this hits theatres”
  • “I bet girls are gonna be screamin in the movie and annoy everyone to hell”

.

And second, people became really upset when they realized that they wouldn’tt be able to see the movie on opening day.

  • “Why is NSN 8 days later where I am. WTF?!?!?!”
  • “I can’t do the concert and I can’t do the premiere because of my stupid class!”
  • “I have to wait till APRIL to see the movie in my country!”

.

But let’s get to the good stuff. What did those lucky few people who got to view “Never Say Never” movie think? What was so impactful about the movie that they decided to share their opinions online? Based on conversations taking place on just February 9 and 10, we have selected a number of the most popular topics. Without even reading what the topics of conversation are, you can see lot of green, and hardly any red, which means a lot of happy customers.

Right off the bat, among people talking about the quality of movie, nearly 100% gave it a positive review.  Most interesting is that the next several popular topics relate to personality characteristics of Justin that came out through the movie. He was perceived to be extremely determined, proud, courageous and trustworthy. For each of these topics of conversations, there were almost no negative comments – Justin wasn’t perceived to be arrogant, egotistical, or fearful. And, a minority of viewers, less than 20%, had more neutral views towards these topics.

So what is the end result?

GO SEE IT NOW: 55%

Whatever: 41%

Don’t waste your money: 4%
